Only 294 days, and 10 hours left as a missionary - Monday, June 17, 2013

Ha. Chandler shared that happy little bit of information with me today. :) That's not that long, right??

Well... Last week I told myself I would keep this one short, but it seems that cool things just keep happening, and I can't help but share them with you all... So I make no promises as to the length of this message. ha.

I am a child of God FHE 6/10/13
On Monday night we had an AWESOME Family Home Evening with the Jimenez family. :) We shared a video clip from the D&C DVDs about our divine potential (the one where they kidnap the prince and try to ruin him morally, but he withstands all the temptations because he knows he's going to be king), and then read from Moses chapter 1 about Moses' conversation with Satan right after he talks to God. He tells Satan that he knows he's a child of God, and that Satan has no glory, and therefore is not worthy to be worshiped. We talked about the need to understand our divine heritage, and to know that we were preordained to be Kings and Queens in the kingdom of heaven. We can remind ourselves of our potential by reading the scriptures, praying, going to church, participating in FHE and other family activities, etc. If we remember who we are, we will become who we're supposed to become. After the lesson we made and decorated paper crowns, and then ate BBQ ribs (Hno Jimenez lives in the states. :)) and some potato casserole with rice and fried platanos. :) Yum!

Tuesday we got rained on... A LOT. We only had a couple lessons and then knocked on lots of doors.

Wednesday we had a district meeting, and talked a lot about what we can do as missionaries to liven up our ward! We've gotta find a way to get our members excited about missionary work or we'll never have success!

In the afternoon we taught the less active daughters of that member I told you about last week. They are pretty far gone... They told us that they don't think that sex is something that can be controlled, and that we should all just do what we want to. ha. I think we'll tell the bishop that we gave it our best shot, and have him send some (preferably female) members to visit with them. Maybe they'll come around.

Then, later on we went with Soani and Braulio (I think I told you about Soani. She's the lady that Anni introduced us to a month or so ago that had surgery on her throat. We've been teaching her and waiting for her hubby to come home from Haiti. He's home. :) And he's AWESOME) to see the house they are building! It is towards the edge of our area in a more jungley section, and it's sitting on the edge of a stream surrounded by banana trees. :) We talked with them about getting our zone together to help them build it! So I'll keep you posted.

On Thursday we met a bunch of new people! :) They're all pretty new still, so I'll let you know if and when they progress. We also did some cleaning out of the ward list. The list is really old, and most of the members that aren't at church every week have fallen through the cracks a little bit. So the bishop has asked us to find them all and figure out if he needs to move their records, or send someone to visit them or what. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong! If a Dominican wants to build a house and make a road that leads to his house, he really doesn't have to do much to get the Government's ok; so the whole country is a maze of random, unorganized streets. We have a map to help us out, but they are always making new roads, and very few of the houses actually have numbers on them... So Elder Meroño and I have been using our orienteering (thanks Brad Clawson) skills to find all the houses of all the little lost lambs in our fold. ha. So far, we've found a whole lot of houses, and a whole NOT lot of members. It's a project. But it keeps us busy. So we're grateful.

Friday as we walked out the door, my companion told me that he's had a change of heart. :) I guess during study in the morning the Spirit reminded him why he's out here, and he loved how he felt! So he asked if we could make a goal to only talk about positive things, and do our best to keep that fire/feeling (of why we're out here) alive. I'm a fan of the idea. As of late we've been joking around a lot, and even though we're joking, our negativity has taken a toll. We're still working hard, and we enjoy each other's company, but we've let the light dim a little bit. So, we're gonna change that. :) We're gonna chose to be happy, and chose to think about non-trunky things! We're gonna make the effort to be positive, and have the desire to have the Spirit with us 24/7. (I'm sorry if I just destroyed the illusion of "perfect" missionaries... If you feel like a child that just found out that Santa isn't real... I apologize. We have trials just like everyone else. Ha.)

Saturday evening we had dinner at Braulio and Soani's house (the one they're living in til they get the new one built). Soani is a closet chef and wanted to cook for us! She made some German style potatoes, Dominican spaghetti, and some Mango juice with milk to wash it all down. It was AWESOME! While she cooked we had a discussion about "The Family: A Proclamation to the World" with them, and talked about the importance of marriage, and becoming one with our spouses. They're in love. And they're probably going to get baptized. :)

Dinner with Braulio and Soani 6/15/2013

Yesterday we taught lessons all afternoon. Anni told us that she and Rafael are pretty much over. He told her today that he's moving out!! Woo Hoo! Hopefully he'll be true to his word, and we'll finally have that road block out of the way!

In the evening we got together with la Familia Montero and Santos' family. We talked about the First Presidency message (Walking in Circles, by Pres. Uchtdorf), and added some thoughts about Moses/Aaron/Joshua and the Children of Israel. If we will be obedient, and focus on the reference points that the Lord has given us (scriptures and modern prophets alike) we will be guided through the wilderness, and wont have to waste 40 years walking around in spiritual circles. :) FOLLOW THE PROPHET!

Then, last night, the dreaded transfer calls came... and... I'm STAYING HERE!!! :) :) :) Elder Meroño and I get 6 more weeks to better ourselves, and our area. :) I don't have to say goodbyes, and I don't have to pack up all my junk. haha. God is good to me. :)

Anyway. I am a happy camper. Life is going great. :) I know who I am, and I know God's plan. What could be better?

Love,
Elder Cade Mooney
